Thanks for taking time to read my blog here.
I’ve have a few new students who want to learn how to sing and play guitar at the same time. Or 5 string banjo, mandolin, lap steel or piano. It’s possible, but one needs to focus on a few things.
Voice lessons: one has to start with the basics: proper breathe control, support, technique and understanding music theory. It’s one thing to stand and just sing. Quite another when you are playing an instrument. Vocally one must find the right key to sing in, especially if you are covering a song. 2nd: understanding how to serve the song. That is, not trying to change the song where no one can recognize it.
Making sure that your voice fits the song: key, feeling and spirit of the song.
Guitar lessons: keeping a steady and consistent rhythm when singing. It’s harder than one thinks. In my guitar lessons we concentrate on keeping time, practicing the downbeat ( the one ) in counting. And not strumming to the timing in of the melody. This applies to playing mandolin, banjo or piano / keyboards.
Final thoughts: you are never too old or too young to start private music lessons. My students range from 5 years old to 60’s plus. They share one thing in common: a desire to learn and to get better at what they do musically.
Fall is a great time to start music lessons with me.
I have a few slots open. Contact me for more information.
